Few things feel more glorious than settling into a bed of freshly washed sheets, but the process of grappling with the duvet and pillow cases is nothing short of a nightmare. So how often should we be washing them?

This varies, but as a rule of thumb we would recommend washing your bed linen every seven sleeps. We suggest a wash at 60 degrees C if the care label allows, or 30 with some antibacterial cleanser.

If washing your sheets every week seems relentless, we unfortunately have some more bad news for you: you need to wash your actual duvets and pillows as well.

Pillows should be cleaned three to four times a year and duvets twice a year. If your duvets and pillows are feather, you will be better off letting us take care of this for you.

Many of us have just been getting on with the laundry for years – but are we always doing it in the best possible way?

FOLLOW OUR EXPERT CARE TIP
Be careful with delicates -

Pop delicate items, like underwear, tights, silks and lingerie, in a laundry bag to protect them.

Don't have one yet? No problem, just use a cotton or polyester pillowcase.
You can tie it off with a piece of laundry cord (white cotton preferred), a white shoelace, a plastic zip tie or just gather the two ends (where the seams are located at the open end of the pillow case) and do an “over-and-under” knot.

- Washing your clothes inside out -
No guide on how to keep clothes looking new would be complete without this simple and often overlooked tip.

It seems like a no-brainer, but be sure to turn all your tops, dresses, and other clothing items inside-out before putting them in the washer. That spin cycle can put a lot of wear and tear on items, so it’s much better to have the inside of your clothes take the brunt of damage rather than the outside.

Plus, if you’re washing something that has beading, sequins, or buttons, washing inside-out can prevent these embellishments from coming loose or falling off.

Face masks have become a necessity, like keys or your wallet — you can’t leave home without them.

For the reusable cloth masks popular with so many people, it's perfectly acceptable to wash them with your laundry.

You can put your families masks in a mesh bag (no missing masks in the washer) with your regular load. Make sure you're using a good detergent or soap.
You want to ensure that they rinse completely clean, because they're next to your face, which can be more sensitive.
A great trick: If you want to make sure they're safe without washing, hold them over a pot of boiling water (with tongs) until they're damp. It's steam-cleaning at its finest. Let them dry completely before you use them again.

One Of Your New Years Resolutions Getting More Exercise? Great!
Let's keep that active wear in good shape too.

While tossing your activewear into the dryer won’t damage the machine itself, it could ruin your clothing.
Since most activewear is sweat-wicking or even coated to protect from the sun’s rays, it’s definitely not dryer-friendly.

Drying your activewear in the dryer and exposing it to all that high heat and friction can be damaging to the functional components that these technical fabrics are developed for.
The heat can also wear away on any elastic properties that your garments may contain and weakens the material—leading to tears, holes, picks, and runs.

Instead, we suggest hanging or laying your activewear flat to dry after washing it in a cold or delicate washing cycle.

If you look back at what you spent on clothing (for yourself, your children, and/or your spouse) last year, it is probably more than you think!
Clothes are expensive – so this year, resolve to take better care of them so that they last longer. With that in mind, here are two tricks for minimising wear and tear on your clothing:

Empty the Pockets
You probably read this first tip in your mom’s voice — and mom is right! While loose change or small pieces of paper may not seem like a big deal in the washer, other items like ink pens or lipstick can cause impossible-to-remove stains.

Sharper objects, like keys, left in pockets during washing or drying can also lead to holes in your clothes. Be sure to empty your pockets before you wash your clothes to make them last longer.

Close Zippers and Fasteners
While you’ve probably been told to empty your pockets, you may not know about closing your zippers.
Getting in the habit of zipping your jeans back up when you take them off can actually help preserve your clothing. Open zippers can snag on other items during washing, which can lead to torn clothing.

Holiday entertaining is fraught with potential disasters. But a cool head and the right products will keep a mini-crisis from becoming a major problem. Here are some quick and easy remedies:

Stains
Turkey, gravy, butter, and salad dressing (oil-based stains): Pretreat with a prewash stain remover. Launder in the hottest water that’s safe for the fabric.

Cranberry sauce, apple cider, and pumpkin pie (fruit-based stains): Treat these stains promptly. Remove excess fruit and run the fabric under cold water. Wash the item as soon as possible using the warmest water and bleach that are safe for the fabric.

Coffee, tea, wine, and soft drinks (beverage stains): Soak or sponge stain in cool water. Pretreat with a prewash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent. Launder using oxygen bleach or chlorine bleach, if safe for fabric.

Colourful cakes and desserts (food-colouring stains): Sponge stain promptly with cool water. If this doesn’t remove stain, soak stain in cool water for at least 30 minutes. After soaking, pretreat with a prewash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent, then launder.

Wrinkled clothes? No time to wash or iron?
You probably have everything you need to make a DIY wrinkle releaser in your bathroom and kitchen cabinets.

Take a spray bottle and fill it with 2 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of hair conditioner and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Spray the mist onto your wrinkled clothes until they’re lightly damp, then stretch and pull the fabric until the wrinkles release.

18/12/2020

It's holiday season and the kids love staying in the pool all day. Sometimes their bathing towels just don't get the chance to dry as it's non-stop pool fun.

Your towels eventually get that damp smell that just won't go away. You know that smell? Let's fix those smelly towels!

1) Place the towels in your washing machine along with 1 cup of white vinegar. Start a wash cycle on the hottest water setting your machine offers.

2) Once the the wash cycle is done, leave the towels in the washing machine. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda over the towels, and start a second hot water wash cycle.

3)After the second wash is finished, make sure to dry your towels THOROUGHLY. You can put them in the dryer, hang them on a clothesline, or whatever you prefer.

This one-two punch of vinegar and baking soda should take care of most mildew and odour problems. If the towels still smell a bit funky after doing all three steps, repeating the three steps again should take care of it.
(Note that this method is a cleaning treatment, and shouldn’t be used as an everyday wash method.)

- Use a washbag or sealable bucket to agitate the water and wash clothes while you drive

- How to Clean a Sticky Iron -

Believe it or not, newspaper makes a great iron cleaner, especially when the bottom is sticky.
Turn your iron up to the highest setting and turn steam off completely. Now run the hot dry iron across newspaper or paper towelling until it's clean.
Still sticky?
Sprinkle a tablespoon of salt on the newspaper, paper towel or dry cotton towel and repeat.

Still not in love with ironing? We are.

We're sure you have always been told to sort your clothing by colour before you do the washing. There is another way...

– Sort them by the density of the fabric.

Heavy fabrics absorb more water than lighter ones. That's why the detergent is washed out of different things to a different extent and why mixed washing damages the clothes made of thin fibre.
**But you should remember 2 exceptions:

- White clothes are always washed separately.
- The temperature shouldn't be higher than 30° C or the clothes of different colours will lose the saturation of the colours.

Add A Tennis Ball While Drying Your Bedding

This is another trick that gets our seal of approval.
Adding two or three tennis balls into the dryer with comforters, pillows, and other bedding will not only help them remain nice and fluffy, it can even help them dry faster.
Of course, make sure they're clean tennis balls.

The Quick How-To Guide To Freshen Your Laundry Hamper

Hampers are handy for keeping dirty laundry in one place, but they can get a little smelly when packed with soiled clothes.

Here's two ways to prevent hamper smells:

• Cut the foot off a pair of old panty hose, fill it with baking soda, knot it, and toss this makeshift odour eater into the hamper. Replace the baking soda every month or so.

• Keep a box of baking soda next to the hamper and sprinkle some on soiled clothes as you throw them in the washer, where the soda will freshen and soften the load.

Hand-wash your clothes in a salad spinner.

Those hand-wash-only items can be a chore to clean.
Throw them into an inexpensive salad spinner with a bit of soap (laundry detergent, baby shampoo — whatever you prefer) to give them a wash that’ll be more powerful than hand-massaging but gentler than the washing machine.
You can also use the spinner to dry them off afterwards!
Great for camping on holiday too!

You know how you can rub out a mistake on paper with a pencil eraser? Well, these handy little items also work well on suede.

But they only work their magic on dry stains, though. So next time you notice a mark on your suede shoes or clothes, grab your kid’s eraser.

Gently rub the mark until it starts to disappear. Be careful not to be too rough. Otherwise, you could end up damaging the material.

No matter how much you strive to properly wash white laundry, sometimes it just sneaks up on you: the dreaded grayness.
And once it’s there, clothes seem to become grayer and grayer with every wash.
As it turns out, there’s a secret weapon in your medicine cabinet that helps to eliminate this problem.

Grab five 325mg aspirin tablets and run it through a normal cycle in the washing machine...and, presto! Whiter whites, no more grey.

Chewing gum on the carpet? The answer is Ice ice, baby! No, not Vanilla Ice – ice cubes. This method is the most efficient when the gum is not ground too deep into the rug.

Put 4-5 ice cubes in a plastic bag and place it on the gum. Once the gum is frozen solid, use a knife to scrape it gently off the rug. The gum will break into little pieces as you go along. Remove them and continue. Cool down the chewing gum with more ice and scrape off until it is all gone.

Make a solution of soap and a drop of white vinegar. Dip a clean cloth in the solution and scrub the remaining stain. Blot dry with a towel.

Need a helping hand? Give us a call, we’ll come to you and keep your carpet clean and in good condition.
